"Okitsu originated as a nucellar seedling of Miyagawa from a controlled pollination with Poncirus trifoliata" Nucellar means it is not a cross. The PT pollen is used to induce seed formation.

Thanks Sylvain, that is interesting info. It might also explain some results in seedless types, where seeds form, but seedlings don't seem to be crossed ??

Satsuma and many other citrus form seeds that are genetically clones of the motherplant. These seeds do not contain any genes from the pollen elder. The pollen is only needed that seeds are build at all. It only initiates the process that the mother plants clones itself via production of clonal seeds, so called nucellar seeds (originating from the nucellus of the mother plant). Poncirus pollen was appllied to satsuma flowers because any true crosses can easily be recognized by the trifoliate leaf form. Any seedling WITHOUT poncirus ancestry, i. e. with monofoliate leaves, is then definitely a clone. These only were kept. Among the clones are some with mutations. These were checked and selected.
