Happy Earth Day yall, I've had a poncirus trifoliata graft outside for sometime. It appears to be alive (scratch test, green wood) but its not producing new leaves? What should I do? Do I keep waiting or is this a death sentence? I once had a tiny defoliated yuzu sapling live as a stem for months without making new leaves and I'm concerned that will happen again.

The tree looks to be still alive.. All parts are still green. Now that summer is near, it just might flush.

The green bark photosynthesizes in the absence of foliage, albeit at a reduced rate. I would expect to see a flush of new growth as soon as food reserves are adequate and temperatures are favorable. In the meantime it's important to maintain proper water levels in the growing medium. Without foliage, transpiration is reduced, but not absent.

I had grafts that stayed like this for 2 years. Then they started to flush. I have no idea what the reason was.

Sounds like I'll be playing the long game on this one then! Hopefully it'll flush sooner than later. Its been cold recently and that definitely isn't helping the case.
Should I fertilize it (reduced amount) or hold until it flushes?

Depends on the length of time since the last fertilization. If it is time, than a light application would be fine.

I have a Poncirus tree that was transplanted to my cooler location and had lost most of its roots by the carelessness of the person who digged it out. It stayed without leaves for two years then it got a few leaves, the next year more. So Poncirus is hard to kill but it can require patience. I guess your small plant will get leaves much earlier probably in summer.

Alas poncirus ist not that hard to kill. I have seen a lot of trees go with root rot.
