Hello,
I used to grow a lot of capsicum and I recently started citrus plants as a hobby. I love it already, but one of my 6 plants, Buddhas Hand, was sick when it was delivered. Since then the symptomes increased, multiplied into different diseases. Sorry for my bad English, I will improve, I promise.
- First I thought it was a simple magnesium deficite, but it seems not to be like it...I tried to fertilize the leafs with a calcium fertilizer I use for my chile peppers. Maybe a bad idea. Last days I started using a 2% epsomite solution.
- There are are bites at the leafs. Could they be caused by sciarids? I had a problem with sciarids before purchasing, I try to get rid of them with bacillus thuringiensis with good results I think.
- Next thing I observed were small brownish and white spots at the downside of the leafs. The spots are quite solid/dense. Mealybugs? I did not see any bugs at all, except for very small bugs which I could not identify... Thrips? But they do not have pinnaes (pinnas? What is the right term in english for bugs wings?) But still, compared to size, it could be.
To solve the problem I started spraying a solution made of 1000ml water, 15ml ethanol, 15ml dish liquid (soap) and a few drops of orange essential oil. I just did about 3 treatments because a friend of mine sent me Chrysoperla carnea and Ichneumonidae.
- I put one ladybird into my tent. Are they eating citrus leafs?? I thought they eat aphids and other bugs. Some blossoms and leafs had holes as someone munched a little.
- last one: mildew. Sure thing...
What can I do? how can I stop it? What do you recommend?
I will upload some fotos which I will post in chronological order. But I struggle with the size of the photos.
Thank you very much for your help.
Warmest regards from Germany

iam not a professional in any way when it comes to citrus plants, but somehow it looks like u have some problems with the potting medium (soil) u are using. some plants have signs of lack of mg, others have sings of too much salt or water in the pot. my plants almost looked the same, before i started to use a potting medium recommended by millet. he says that it has to be a good draining medium and therefore u should mix ur own soil of 1/3 peat, 1/3 pine bark and 1/3 perlite or something alike. u dont have to use the exact same potting soil, but make sure ur soil consists of different types and sizes of ingredients, to ensure a proper drainage. since iam using this medium, the only problem for my trees are the light conditions and spider mites...... and myself

Thanks for the help and info raggashack!
I bought it in that substrate and pot, which does not mean it is perfect... It may be that there is an air chamber in the substrate, I put a humidity tester into the pot sometimes. Today I will buy a pot and some citrus substrate and see where it ends.
Have a good day and stay healthy

go ahead and try it, but the citrus substrate u can buy here in europe is basically 100% peat, maybe with a little bit clay in it. its not gonna change ur situation a lot, but go ahead and try it. what u wanna reach inside ur pot is, good aeration and therefore u should mix the substrate with something.
*edit* u could also think about using clay pots instead of plastic, they have a better aeration. try it and u will see how ur plants react....
stay healthy

In Europe you can use Seramis & mix it 50/50 with garden soil to make a excellent draining mix. Here in the states I use Turface MVP.

Thanks guys! Luckily I've got about 30 liters of seramis at home. I'm gonna try that.

Hello, I did not exchange the whole substrate yet, but I put the Plants in bigger Pots together with Flora Gard Citrus Substrate, mixed with about 10% Seramis granulate. I will have to mix the old soil with the new substrate when I feel it is nessecary. My Bergamotte has weird spots on the leaves. Is that a fungus?
