I just watched a video with a tasting of the new hybrid from the cross Miho Satsuma x Poncirus trifoliata. It looks like a very good citrandarin, almost seedless, juicy and with a pineapple flavour. It's a good inspiration to try crossing satsumas with trifoliata, apparently Miho can be a seed parent, I read that Miyagawa can produce hybrids too...

MIHO x Poncirus was shown on the Citrus Expo this year.
Here is a statement about it: I forget the guy’s name but I believe he said he made the cross. I tried it after the convention and while the pulp wasn’t bad, the aftertaste from the rind was positively awful and stayed with me for half of my drive back to NC. I think one of the words you’ve used in the past described it best “skunky”!
I try to pollinate Miyagawa since 3 years. So far not a single seed was formed. I found seeds in Satsumas from Greece. But I have no idea what variety it is.

Some people are too sensitive to poncirus and it is actually good thing that poncirus bad aftertaste ended only in the rind and not in the pulp. For me poncirus does not smell bad, Shekawsha and Daoxian rind smells worse like kerosine, Sunki x poncirus taste also worse than atleast better poncirus clones.

For me the rind of citranges smells worse than that of pure poncirus which fully ripe fruit fragrance is quite correct.
My SunkiXPT gave a very big harvest this year, its taste for me is comparable to fruits of Calamondin, a little bit more bitter.
Miyagawa is giving quite fertile pollen, I have several its hybrids with 5star, not flowered yet.

My Sunki x Poncirus fruit was a bad mix of strong bitterness with some sweetness, but it was the first fruit on a young plant, nice to hear it can get better, I do also have US 812 another SunkixPT cross but it has not yet had fruit.
Both grafted on PT SunkixPT has longer more mono and bifoliate leaves, US 812 has most leaves trifoliate.
I was surprised to see a lot of yellow pollen on the flowers of my satsuma variety Kalinin 5, this year I might try to use it to pollinate FD and some better poncirus...
Citrumelo 5* x Miyagawa sounds very interesting...
For me the most important thing from this MihoxPT is that satsuma genes for seedlessness are dominant, if at least few seedlings from backcrossing (satsuma x poncirus) x poncirus will be seedless too and still have somehow improved taste, this may be a good way to create an almost seedless "improved trifoliate" for zone 6...

Hello Ilya, Is the SunkiXPoncirus on your picture the plant I have sent you some time ago? How do you like its fruits? I found the juice quite drinkable. The rind was bitter as hell.

Yes, the bud stock was from you. Quite impressive harvest this year. The fruit quality is similar to that of calamondin, only a trace of internal oils, rather bitter but no poncirus aftertaste.

5* x miyagawa sounds very promising. How old are your seedlings Ilya ? What do you expect for winterhardiness ? Ripening time should also be good.
