I'm about to try my hand at grafting and thought about doing a couple of cocktail trees. Specifically, a mandarin and tangelo (since tangelo needs to be pollinated by mandarin) and a navel and Valencia (different harvest times, one for eating and one for juicing). But these are going to be in containers and I started to wonder if it was worth it. Container trees are generally kept smaller and produce smaller yields than in-ground counterparts. Would it be too limiting to try and put two varieties on the same small tree?

It should work out fine. I would graft 2 self pollinating mandarins so if 1 dies you still have a branch for your tangelo. If your tangelo dies you will still get fruit from either or both mandarins till a new tangelo can get started.

Most of citrus don't need pollination to set fruits (Parthenocarpy).
