I have 2 seed grown Fukushu kumquat , 1 Fukushu on C35, and 2 more Fukushu on straight thorn straight trunk flying dragon roots. Can I expect all 5 trees to reach the same mature size since the kumquat is already a true dwarf or would the C35 roots push a bigger tree. These trees will be outside and or in containers. Should I place a certain rootsock outside and a different rootstock in container. Thanks

Not all Flying Dragon (FD) seed produce the true dwarfing FD cultivar. Approximately 50 t0 60% are true FD. True FD cultivars have curved thorns and smaller leaves than non-nucellar seedlings. C-35 is a hybrid of Ruby orange x Weber-Fawcett trifoliate . In many trials, trees on C-35 on average produce trees about 83% as large as trees on Carrizo. Therefore, I think your Fukushu trees on either root stock will grow to be approximately the same height. With a slim possibility that the trees on C35 could just be a little bit taller.

Millet Thanks How do you think those 2 grafted tree would compare in size to the seedlings when grown to full size.

Poncirusguy, I am sorry, but I don't completely understand you question.

Fukushu will grow to 25 ft tall on it's own roots, I have a seed grown tree that is 25 ft tall. Grafting it on trifoliata will restrict it's size & also keeping it in a container will restrict it's size.

Laaz, I think what Poncirusguy is asking is if the kumquats he grafted to his two rootstocks, one which a non true FD rootstock (straight thorns & straight stems) and the other is a C35 rootstock will they produce the same size tree or not.

FD weather true from seed or not will restrict the size of the tree. Just because the tree doesn't have curved thorns & twisted branches doesn't mean it still isn't a dwarf. C35 won't make a large tree like using sour orange, but will still make a good size tree similar to swingle.

Interesting, Laaz you think the tree on the non true FD will be shorter than the tree on C35, and I think they will be the very close to the same. Both of poncirusguy's rootstocks have dwarfing capabilities. Time will tell, as Poncirusguy's tree grows. This thread will be interesting to watch, and I think this type of question is a good forum question.

Non true Flying Dragon will still be a dwarf, C35 will make a much larger tree as will swingle. I have many trees on swingle that are over 15 ft tall. Everything I have on Flying Dragon is about 8 ft tall. When growing out my FD seeds for rootstock I never went through them to see if the thorns were curved or the branches were twisted, I just grew them to a graftable size & used them...

Laaz, I understand what your saying. However, straight thorn, and straight stem is just not Flying Dragon.

I am wondering of my 3 root types What would be best in a container. My seedling in ground Fukushu is 7 feet tall 5 foot diameter and I can protect it up to 12 feet tall and 6 feet diameter. I have 1 56 gallon container. My other seed grown Fukushu is 6 feet tall 3 foot diameter in a 30 gallon pot. My C35 Fukushu is 5 feet tall by 30 inch diameter and is in a 30 gallon pot. Last are my 2 Flying dragon Fukushus in 5 gallon buckets. My question is which of the 3 rootstocks are best outside vs inside. Thanks.

I have three Fukushu kumquats, all from FourwindsGrowers on whatever rootstock they use. One is in the ground in my greenhouse, and the other two are in containers. The one in-ground grows fast, I cut it back when it reached the ceiling of my greenhouse. The ones in containers grow moderately, 4-6ft after a few years. You can cut them back and they'll still fruit just fine.

Thank you all for helping. 1 last thing. Would it be easier to control the size of a potted seed grown Fukushu kumquat or a potted Fukushu kumquat on C35.

I would bet they are pretty similar.
