Anyone growing Hirado Buntan pomelo? How hardy is this?
Tree vigorous, medium-large; leaves large, thick, and broadly winged. More cold-resistant than most pummelos.
Perhaps someone starts a new hybrid with PT.

I had one & it took the cold pretty well. I never used the fruit so I removed it & put a limequat in it's place. I actually won best in show at the citrus expo with it. Here's some photos from the 2009 Expo with my Hirado.

It was sweet but dry. I like my grapefruit better

Wow it looked so good. I bought from supermarket a red pommelo from china which looks exactly the same, but no seeds, very good taste not dry at all. How cold do you think it can take?

Frankly, HB is my absolute favorite! Membranes are but tough but fruits (at least mine) are always very juicy. This would be my top recommendation among pomelos. As Laaz says fairly hardy.

I read somewhere that Hirado Buntan is somewhat bitter. Is it true?

I read somewhere that Hirado Buntan is somewhat bitter. Is it true? Ilya, I can only compare HB, Chandler, and Sarawak. My Chandler was always dry no matter when picked and how much watered. Store-bought Chandlers were better but never tasted good. Sarawak is fabulous (perhaps even too sweet) but membranes were very tough. HB is with excellent balance of sweetness and acidity, no bitterness, juicy, with somewhat softer membranes. HB is my favorite. Oh, one more thing: I am not comparing them to Golden, Cocktail, Oroblanco grapefruits, which are more like pomellos. :-)
