![]() Does anyone have any tips for my lemon saplings? I grew them from pips and had a very steady growth for 8 months. All of a sudden I have had two of the plants suddenly curl up and die. They were the smallest of the bunch but they seemingly looked healthy. I’ve lost two in two weeks and am now worried for my larger two that are left. Nothing seems to help. I repotted the latest one and the roots looked fine to me. There doesn’t seem to be any sign of pests that I can see either. I added a slow release citrus fertiliser to the pot a few months ago - did I fertilise too early? They are a lemonade lemon but I don’t know the actual type.

It appears that the stem in the ellipse has died. The leaves and buds below the damage should take over.

Thank you. Should I cut the dead part off? Can you offer any insight as to why this might have happened?

I am not so optimistic. The foot looks dead too.Probably phytophthora.

Yes, I think Sylvain is certainly correct in his prediction Phytophthora. When you plant a seedling in a container phytophthora, (derived from Greek meaning Plant Destroyer), very frequently appears when the growing medium remains wet for a longer period of time. Two things you need to do the next time you plant a citrus seed. First, don't use such a large container. Second, water your new seedling only in the morning, and then set the container on the windowsill so that the sun will quickly dry the medium's surface. Phytophthora requires a wet surface to grow, sun drying the surface will prevent this from happening. Don't give up. Good luck with your next adventure.

Oh no I’ve been so enjoying watching these little fellas grow. The one I pictured still has green and healthy leaves at its bottom half. I’ve trimmed it and repotted into dry fresh soil into a smaller pot and put on my sill. Time will tell I guess. I’ve read about hydrogen peroxide as a treatment? Is it worth following up? I’ve two others looking quite well. Would your tips for these stronger plants be the same regarding watering frequency and position?
