Does anyone have experience with the valentine pomelos. How cold hardy is it . Is it worth growing. How does root stock affect flavor of fruit.

I have a 11-ft X 12-ft in ground Valentine tree grafted on FD. I cannot tell you how cold hardy Valentine actually is, but being 1/2 pummelo it can not be all that hardy. My main complaint concerning Valentine it is somewhat insipid, due to the lack of an acid content.

My problem with fruit , it is too sweet and/or too sour. Low acid low sugar but with flavor is great. I like my insipid New Zealand lemonade, Arkansas blacking apples, and Meiwa kumquats.

Last week found this fallen fruit in unheated frame, still with some green specks
It tastes in between orange and pummelo with some strawberry hint. Good ratio of sugar/acid, but only 10°Brix.

My valentine pomelo is now about 6 feet tall by 5 feet wide and has 1 fruit. I have taken a bud and grafted it successfully to a Seville sour orange seedling.

Millet had sent me a valentine some time ago and it has produced two crops of fruit now. It is sweet but no sourness. My father in law loves them but I prefer chandler. I haven't had any other types of pummelos to compare to.
My valentine is on trifoliate orange, if that matters. The skin on mine only becomes yellow, not orange like in your pictures.

Brian, you may also like the taste of cocktail_grapefruit (sometimes called mandalo). It is also very juicy and sweet , many seeds, easy to peel, with very little acid taste (not as acidic as a grapefruit).

In the second year my Valentine had 3 fruits. Two were ripe in mid of december, already good, but orange flesh with very few red stripes. This 3. fruit I assumed to get a real valentine date pummelo, but a week ago also this fruit felt in my hand. I was really flashed when I yesterday opened the fruit and saw the dark red and juicy flesh. Regarding taste I found it excellent, fine Orange/grapefruit taste and balanced sour/sweet.
