Hello I am new to this group and look forward to being here with you. I have been cultivating pomegranates and figs for many years. Citrus plants have also been my passion for half a year. I have the Citrus Prague, hirado buntan and HRS 899A from Bernhard Voss. I live in Germany USDA 7b. I want to buy the mandarin variety "Xie Shan"and later plant it in the garden with protection. Which of the three rootstocks makes better fruit in terms of quality and size for the Xie Shan? Poncirus trifoliata or C35 or FA5? Thank you...

living in Europe you should be able to get a Seville sour orange for its seeds. I did so and had a graft ready seedling in 7 months. They grow fast on Seville. New Zealand lemonade will be 2 years old this July. As for your question. Attachments:HS126000.pdf (559.85 KB)

C35 citrange is not particularly hardy, PT is the most freeze resistant and is the best if your soil is neutral or slightly acid, FA5 can tolerate some degree of alkalinity.

Performance of Forner-Alcaide 5 and Forner-Alcaide 13, hybrids of Cleopatra mandarin x Poncirus trifoliata, as Salinity-Tolerant Citrus Rootstocks. I have US897 Hybrids of Cleopatra and Flying dragon. It is more cold hardy than C35. My C35 took damage at 10F where as my US897 took the same damage at 0F in an experiment I did 2 winters ago.

SylvainYes, I mean the rootstock "Forner-Alcaide 5". This rootstock should be good cold hardy. As a rootstock it is very productive with mandarins, and early ripe fruits. poncirusguy your test result is interesting.

Could you give me a guess as how many seeds per orange. I'm just wondering how many to buy. I think I'll have to order them online. I guess I'll just buy loads and make marmalade. I'm pleased to hear how fast they grow although I doubt they will grow that fast for me. I'm in Ireland and we rarely see the sun even in summer.
