I have been asked this question twice today. So there must be others that want to know. Question: When does poncirus go dormant? Answer: Poncirus goes dormant when temps start to head downward to about 50 degrees F. That is now for me. Poncirus makes fruit that matures in Sept for me. After maturation the fruit remains on the tree for quite a while but the leaves start to turn yellow and drop. That is why they are so easy to spot in winter. The leaves are gone and the fruit sticks out visually. I think that the reason some folks say their poncirus does not go dormant is because they do not have poncirus.....they have one of the many hybrids. It has trifolate leaves but it does not go dormant. I promise that when temps get to the cut off range, poncirus will go dormant.....and it will not be in a hurry to leaf out until conditions are right for it.

Poncirus can be quite variable in degree of deciduous behavior. Seedlings under 3 years of age can retain leaves until February in my area. Mature, bearing age branches are just beginning to turn yellow. I suspect late summer heat helps complete the abscission layer allowing the leaves to drop. Leaves formed later in the season appear not to change color nor drop as readily.
