I have a winemaker friend. I give him my excess kumquats each year. Two years ago he returned the "used" kumquats to me. I washed them out, seperated the seed from the pulp and planted them. They were big enough to bud this Spring. I did so and now have trees big enough to top to induce scaffold limbs to grow. They were a mixture of Mewia and Nagomi seed so I know not which is what but.....they are growing well and are healthy plants. Since kumquat is a cold hardy citrus, why would this not work? Anyone ever tried this approach? What drawbacks can be encountered? In the process of planting several of them in the ground. I think this is going to be an experiment that is going to work out well. Regardless I will learn something. Any opinions or experience out there?

I have heard stories in the past that kumquats do not do well on their own roots. Hoever, my Changshu is doing great on it's own roots after 15 years in the ground.

Well that is impressive. I too have read that kumquat does not do well from seed. I too have a Mewia, from seed that is very tall, produces every year and has no problems. I am going to put this to the test. I consider slow groth rate and benching drawbacks for rootstock. Not sure if these will be factors using kumquat.

I have 4 seed grown meiwa trees and 1 seed grown Fukushu and all 5 look great. All have done very well on their own roots. Better than my grafted kumquats of each variety. 5 year old seed grown Fukushu. just under 7 feet tall. 3 year old seed grown Meiwa kumquat tree not quit 3 feet tall.

Quite a bit slower than down here. My Fukashou was 15 ft tall by 5 years & producing fruit. It is now well over 25 ft.

Interesting read. I used to graft kumquat as rumor has it that they needed to be on a rootstock. The last 10/12 years I have grown kumquat (of various cultivars) from seed. I find: They do grow well on their own roots. They are cold hardy aplenty on their own roots. They are like Meyer lemon in that a sustained freeze will damage the tops but they will come back from roots in Spring. They make good grafting stock. I find them agreeable to make cocktail trees from. Some of my most appreciated trees have 4 or 5 quats on them plus Kishu mandrin.....people just love these trees.

Dave I am much newer than you on growing kumquats from seed. I to have found the grow very nicely on their roots. I started a bunch this January for dwarfing rootstock.

Hear that pguy. I recommend growing quats on their roots for everyone. I am not the only one that grows them on their own roots. I know that the information about not growing from seed has been floating for a long time. It is not true for many of us. I am one that "does not believe everything he hears."😁

Mother nature knocked two stems of new growth off my meiwa yesterday. I'm wondering about using these for cuttings. Is this possible? I've never done cuttings before, any tips?

I have not been able to root any kumquat sticks. Thanks Steve, I suppose I'll toss them then. If you couldn't do it, there's no way I'll be able to!
