Citrus clementina Comune 2x X C. sinensis Tarocco 4x.In this type of crossing, the unbalance of the ploidy level between the embryo and the endosperm , (3:4) makes the seeds incapable of germination in vivo. Therefore the embryo has been cultured in vitro. Patented in 2017 (2017/1004)

I am pretty sure I like the old way. How long before we have all reproduction in vitro and have a gmo product?

I am pretty sure I like the old way. How long before we have all reproduction in vitro and have a gmo product? Citrus industry is looking for seedless fruits, and as far as I know, breeders acquire it by two ways. Crossing diploids and tetraploids to obtain triploid embryo, which as I understand it cannot survive without "help" in vitro, or by irradiating buds, seeds with gama rays to get seedless mutant. Virtually all new cultivars are formed this way.

Yes I agree. It is not that I am not amazed at some of the new stuff that people are coming up with. I love the different pigmented citrus. I wish to have them....but I love to cross, plant and grow, and to know that the results were of my doing. Nothing wrong with new processes and resultant fruit. I wish for the time, ability and the funds to create in vitro.
