Hi all, I'm from Courtenay, British Columbia. Our climate is Zone 8. My microclimate might be an 8b but its cutting it close.
I love eating sweet citrus and I've been growing whatever seed I can get my hands on... Meyer lemons from Costco (many don't look alike, yet a number resemble one kind, reflecting its origins) Morocco clementines or mandarins from the Superstore... Sweet limes, limes, lemons.
The rare seed in a seedless bag of citrus excites me. I have Texas grapefruit seedlings but grapefruit is not my favorite. My favorites are satsumas and some of the slightly sour mandarins for that tang.
I have about 4, older, multiple years old citrus that I grew from seed, and about 2 or 3 that are bought, grafted trees...
Unfortunately true to my name I can only vaguely identify most of them. The best performers seem to be some type of mandarin or Clementine and possibly a Grapefruit or Pomelo (grown from seed) that withstood unheated yet frost shielded exposure on a south facing second story sundeck.
I have a genuine improved Meyer lemon tree as well but compared to my 'best performers' it's not doing so hot but its leaves haven't dropped or crinkled up. I accidentally neglected to water to one of the mystery trees during the last cold month when there was more sunshine to dry the soil in the pot which contributed to its damage but I think it will recover in the summertime.
I'm hoping the mandarin and the 'grapefruit' will flower this year but not counting on it.
