Hi guys. I am going to suggest a pollen thread. If the Admins believe it is a worthy subject. - I would like to paste in some links to USDA studies on pollen storage. And if anyone has lab experience specific to "citrus pollen storage," please contribute, and help others.
- I was specifically interested in cold tolerant Vars. But flavor is of course a huge concern.
- Can anyone tell us if virus could be transmitted by pollen? Does that mean growers in quarantine areas cannot exchange pollen?
I have been having fairly good luck with a simple method. Flowers/anthers are placed in paper envelopes in the refrigerator. They become desiccated. After 5 to 7 days the pollen is dry enough to place the envelopes into a container in the freezer. It's very low tech, and seems to work well with many types of pollen. -But pollen viability drops after approx 1 year. (maybe it was that Hefeweizen I forgot in the freezer??) Perhaps if growers listed their; species / heirloom variety / bloom season. It's been over 100 years since Dr. Walter Swingle produced the Thomasville Kumquat, and no-one has bred the extreme frost hardiness into other citrus -& poncirus flavor out. Such a waste. And it would probably take a F-2 back cross to create a sweet progeny without poncirus terpines. Times a wasting, Zap

The kishu mikan mandarin has a dominant female sterility trait, that can be transferred through cross pollination. Kishu mikan pollen has been used to produce nearly seedless progeny. But the trait can STILL be transferred to the further generations through pollen. (No ova..) Seedless citrus.. Yummy!
An Ancient Heirloom Var' - and therefore unpatented..

Here is an article on pollen storage of C. tachibana: Pollen Storage I have sucessfully pollinated F. margarita with frozen pollen of Swingle 5 Star. It was frozen for a few month. So it seems to work.

The same link I had. I should have marked my link "Pollen storage" better.

Thanks Till. For some reason this forum doesn't default the links to a different color. I'll have a look & see if I can change that.
